Default Voice coils "rated power handling"

this is a side note from my other thread here to keep it related to that thread where needed.

the following test was done on a transformer stepping power down to 12.5v AC nominal.

Test/example uses a sundown SA motor with pole vent / gap vents and a non vented former

point of the test- a coil can not be rated a given power handling.

reason- a voice coil needs to be used in a proper gap, and motor with good cooling to stay at proper heat levels especially when in high power ranges in relation to there overall diameter and mass of wire.

issues that cause less power handling- a coil being too loose on the pole piece with hurt handling due to lack of heat transfer between the inner wall of former and outer body of pole.

lack of cooling performance in the motor being used. bad cooling or lack there of (no air transfer with general pressure) to aid in heat transfer via air. this is a BIG issue and is displayed with the testing below.

test example A-

12.37v AC
1.41 A
~ 17.44 watts
4 ohm nominal
ambient temp- 71.2f

All stock venting used / unblocked

highest recorded temps- 96.94 - 97.05f
------------------------------------------

test example B-

12.44v AC
1.42 A
~ 17.66 watts
4 ohm
ambient temp- 71.2f

Pole vent closed

highest recorded temps- 100.15 - 100.22f
----------------------------------------

test example C-

12.39v AC
1.40 A
~17.34 watts
4 ohm
ambient temp- 71.9

No pole vent or gap venting

highest recorded temps- 99.00 - 99.10
-------------------------------------

as can be seen, and assume each test was a different motor with different cooling, the resulting efficiency is very different especially at ~17 watts. as the power level goes up, the changes would be exponential to these results.

as ive been designing coils, ive been asked many times what the "power handling" is for my coils so im making this as a preset reminder that there can not be a such thing as there are far too many factors when the coil is in use.

Possibly one of the reasons why DD Z's handle so much power? Tons of exposure to ambient air.

I used to touch my coils between songs to see how things were doing, haha

yes and no. simply hanging a coil out there will not work. has to be organized air in the sense that the air is channeled and pressured across the coils face to make a transfer.

and open coil wouldnt last long

The pole vent may be small, but a lot of air is moved through it.

Not just simply a coil left out in the air

pole vents main usage is noise reduction. the rest of the pressure running past the former ID and pole is whats cooling

Interesting to note, the JL 13tw5 uses an external coil, the motor is inside it.

Maybe? Maybe it was another slim sub I'm thinking about where the coil rides outside
