Default Sundown Audio SA12 vs Skar VVX 12

[general reference]

Comparing Sundown SA series and Skar VVX subs is like comparing Chevrolet vs Cadillac.
There are benefits to each but they are very different.

Lets compare 12s
The SA12 has a black dual 1" slug motor assembly, a machined aluminum Pole Piece cap to direct airflow into the gap for cooling, vent holes at the base of the gap, custom tooled venting spacer, 4 spoke basket, heavy duty coil, triple joint support ring, single spider with sewn leads, paper/pulp cone, boob style dust cap and a very thick foam rubber surround which creates about half the stability/compliance resistance of the moving assembly.

The VVX12 has a triple 3/4" slug motor assembly with Chromed front and back plates, a 12 spoke basket with large vents(standard), heavy duty coil, triple joint support ring, single spider with sewn leads, paper/pulp cone, full cone dust cap and a rubber surround which is very compliant and while it doesn't stabilize the moving assembly as much as the foam surround on the SA12, it allows the woofer to have a lower Fs, move more freely and by taking up less space allows more cone area.
QUOTE - SSA "The VVIX12 has a unique voice coil air flow system with no vent flaring on the back plate. Instead, Jacob designed a system in which the top of pole has an enormous flare and the coil former has vent holes. This creates a nice flow patern through the holes and out the pole (vent)."

i just got 1 question right now

what is the diameter if the double stack motor compared to the triple stack ?

doesnt that add to " motor strength " , power handling

Skar 6.25" slug diameter

Sundown 7.25" slug diameter.

*These measurements was taken with a tape measure*

The motor force [Bl] is a combination of the magnet strength and the coil's properties.

While motor force means something, it's not everything. The in enclosure efficiency is what counts.
{it doesn't matter how strong the motor is if it can't perform when you have it in the enclosure}
[generalized statement not regarding either of these specifically]

As for the specs, I guess I owe you them also. The Skar specs are generic and are not specified as to which version D2 or D4.
Based on the 3.8 resistance, I assume the Skar specs to be for the D2 version.

The VVX-12 Bl spec is 19.8.
The SA-12 Bl spec is 21.64 on the D2 and 25.67 on the D4.

nope... the motor has to overcome the subs own suspension... if it's too stiff, you could have twice the motor force and half the sound.
{forgot to mention that}

Also, there are so many more things to consider.

here's one..
what are the coil diameters and lengths?
how do they differ?
how much heat can each take before they fail?
what is the former made of?
how much clearance is in the gap?
how much force can the cone take before it fails?

one=confusion
Vas = total compliance of the woofer. {more important than just the spider stiffness}

the Vas is the "volume of air compliance equivalency" it means the volume of air which has the same squishyness as the subwoofer. {more is squishier}

VVX-12 D2 = 59.2L
SA-12 D2 = 21.21L

The skar vvx-12 is more than twice as squishy as the Sundown Audio SA-12.

As for box size, the sundown SA-12 essentially uses a smaller enclosure.. but because of it's higher resonant frequency, the Skar VVX-12 in the same box might be louder at low frequency.

skar has been turning alot of heads with their subs, prices are very competitive also. for fun i modeled the skar 12 in a bunch of different boxs from sealed,ported,4th order,6th order and so on and that sub will basicly perform well in all of them. with an EBP=49 its right in the middle of going either way sealed(4th order) or ported (6th order)
