Default Can 8" punch hx2 be reconed?

So I picked up 3 Rockford punch HX2 8" subs for a pretty sweet price. They all ohmed out at 4 ohms per coil. 2 of them work great, minus the ridiculously soft sagging spiders. And the third one was frozen in place.

I've taken apart the frozen one and noticed the basket is not lined up with the magnet perfectly, thus explaining why the coil was stuck. I've pulled the basket off and been trying to line it up but I can't because the magnet is so strong. I think somebody dropped this thing pretty good causing this.

So basically my question is, how can I get the basket lined up right? Because obviously I'm not going to buy a recone if its just going to mess it up. Keep in mind I've never done a recone before but I think doing it on these will help me learn.

the top plate is probably shifted, theres only one way for a basket to go on that motor, it cant be crooked.

you can desolder the leads, salvage the cone assembly and replace the spider.

salvaging the surround is the hard part because you need a 3/16" flat screwdriver and force it like a chisel under the edge and toward the middle without wrecking the surround. {roughly 134 times per 8" sub}

the dust cap is glued down really good but you can take a axe body-spray can and cut a rounded piece out of it and bend it rounded like the end of a finger (1/2" arc).. and use that to lift the edge of the dustcap and cut the glue.

cut the old spider off about 3/4" around the coil, then it's just a matter of forcing the new spider over the coil and gluing it to the coil and what's left of the original spider.

Carefully scrape the rest of the glue chunks off the bottom of the surround where it meets the landing. (bare utility knife blade give you precise control via your finger tips)

now you have a drop in recone.

cover the gap and clean the landings, then make sure all debris is clear.

for shims; cut the straight parts from two walmart party cups (like red solo cups)

I suggest using Amazing Goop for every part you need to glue. {it sets up in like 10 min or less so make sure you work fast} by set-up, I mean, that's your working time.. the glue takes like 12hours to fully cure.

ps..

punch slugs are generally not aligned perfectly.. but as long as the gap is at least the minimum clearance from top to bottom, they work.

Ok, i cant get a pic of what i mean to load. I'll try to explain. There is a small spacer attached to the basket with screws, its glued together and not the part that comes apart. The spacer has come off the magnet so all I have to do is pull hard to separate the basket/spacer from the motor itself. I'm assuming the spacer is still supposed to be attached and the basket unscrews from the spacer.

That's why I say the basket is shifted to one side, not lining up with motor. It doesnt show signs of being dropped, but I'm pretty sure thats what happened.

Hope this makes more sense...

that's not a spacer. it's the top plate of the motor.
