Default "Box rise" and why not to worry

I see a lot of people thinking that if their "rise" was less theyd be hitting better scores or that its hurting them - not always the case.

"Box rise" is natural as the enclosure and speaker have their own impedance profiles. Take FS for example. The woofer is at a very high impedance yet output doesnt magically drop 500% or something.

Take for example this enclosure:

You could say the "tuning" is around 36hz physical. It is a D4 driver in parallel. At 38hz it is just over 3ohm. At 40, 4.5 ohm, 47hz, 17ohm, even at 55hz its still at 4.5ohms before the impedance peak goes back down.

Now of course depending on the way you design your box you can shift the impedance curve to get the most physical power out at a certain frequency. But the point is, if youre getting high "rise" dont worry about it. It is perfectly natural and the woofer gets more efficient in these areas.

For example, you burp a 143 at 47hz there when impedance is crazy high. Then you go down just a few hz to 40 where its a quarter the impedance it was at 47, and you burp a 142. If you clamp them both, chances are youll see more physical power at 40hz, even though your score was worse. Why? Impedance rise happens and the woofer naturally compensates for it.

Many people try to burp with daily boxes and get scared when they see crazy rise. If youre shooting for SPL in a daily box in the first place, the little difference this will make wont hurt you.

If anything is wrong here let me know. This is currently my take on it. For all out SPL yes you can shift the box parameters to have a low impedance at burp and get the most power. But this is a practical write up for most who arent extreme competitors.

i like the write up only thing i would add would be actual results from rise/ clamped power
i think taylorpro has a few examples that would be great in here to give the credibility of real world results

How would you go about shifting the curve so that you get minimal rise at your peak frequency for maximum spl output?

port the box at your peak frequency. box peaks sealed at 50 hz, port it there and watch what happens.

say you run a 1ohm amp @.5 ohm it should still effect the impedence rise across the entire playable range? in which case the sub would "see" more power across this range? ie. the impedence spike would be less there by increasing power and as long as its clean and the sub/elec can take it?

Well my suv peaks at 43hz so I should tune the box for that. Also should the box be on the bigger side or the smaller side or does it even matter?
