how does this work?
Does it just pop it open a bit and you gotta manually open the trunk? or it opens the whole trunk open?

I think it basically opens a small amount and if your trunk would open with that small amount then yes, if not you would need an actuator not a popper

If you shave your door handles, or trunk lid, you need some way to open the bear-claw type latch on the inside of the door. You set this up (usually at the bottom of your door) rigged with a cable between the popper and the latch itself. I recommend welding the lock mechanism open, so the latch doesn't somehow get locked.

I've daily driven shaved cars for years.

For trunk applications:
The solenoid is mounted in the trunk lid and performs the same action as a key being turned in the lock, so yes, you still have to manually open the lid.

For shaved door handle applications:
The solenoid is mounted inside the door and performs the same action as lifting/pulling the door latch handle. There are "door poppers" available also, which are basically spring-loaded rods that you install in each door jamb so when you hit the door open button the door "pops" open a foot or so.

Hope this helps
