The solenoid is mounted in the trunk lid and performs the same action as a key being turned in the lock, so yes, you still have to manually open the lid.
For shaved door handle applications:
The solenoid is mounted inside the door and performs the same action as lifting/pulling the door latch handle. There are "door poppers" available also, which are basically spring-loaded rods that you install in each door jamb so when you hit the door open button the door "pops" open a foot or so.
