GLI's are baind-aids,
main two causes of alternator whine/engine noise in the audio signal is poor vehicle grounds( battery to chassis, battery to engine block, alternator to engine block, alternator to chassis, dash grounds distribution to firewall), and cheap equipment( head unit, amplifiers ).
9 out of ten times, my engine noise issues were solved with buying higher quality equipment, and using head units that have 4 volt pre-outs or better. the other 1 out of 10 times was usually a bad ground somewhere in the vehicle. nowadqys, every install i do, i ground the head unit to the firewall directly, and i also run a 16 gauge wire from that grounding point to the ground distribution block in the rear of the vehicle for my amplifiers, to help eleviate the potential differences..

couldnt agree more with them being a band-aid, but its not always a question of buying higher quality equipment, but usually simply an issue with bad wiring, more specifically a bad ground

Ground Loop Isolators/Engine Whine thread
Engine whine is usually caused by the head unit and/or the amp not being on the same ground (Electronics 101).... typically head units are powered from the fuse box which is powered by the alternator (which is not filtered like the battery and is also grounded to the body and not the battery ) after the vehicle is started, where as most amps are connected directly to the battery giving the head unit and the amp a different ground thus allowing it to pick up alternator whine.... The ground loop isolator causes the ground from the body to be isolated and filtered from the amp preventing it from getting alternator whine through the head unit which has a built in filter for the internal amplifying circuit but not for the preout circuit to the amp...
