New Obsidian 12" TL score

1134 Views 13 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  gobig77
148.9 Legal and 150.7 in the kick at 58 Hz. Same amount of power as the 15" in the previous test. This week we will probably modify the enclosure and try for higher numbers.

Not bad at all for a single 600 watt 12 but these numbers are only good for burp guys since you're throwing 2k+ at it and in the real world, it's hard to tell if it would survive that much power daily. You planning on doing any daily testing at like 1k or so? I mean, it would be nice to know what kind of numbers are possible with the right amount of power that a person can do daily.
We can do testing long-term again, but we have already demonstrated that with the 5 minute torture test on the test bench at 60 Hz. I have been in the industry for so long that I can run a 3500D at 2 Ohms on one of the shallow BM mkIII's for 4 months without a problem, so me performing a long term daily test might not be fair to some users. Keep in mind these Obsidian's are 600 watt, under $160 woofers. For what you see in these TL scores you can always estimate based on the rule of power; half the power is a -3 dB difference. These numbers are more of a torture test and proving grounds than a "these do great on the meter up high" sort of thing. Designing subs to peak high is no fun IMO. I like to have fun with these drivers and play them loud and play them deep. It's amazing what these drivers are capable of. In this test we lengthened the port a LOT and the score didn't go down a lot, which was to be expected. But we kept the tuning higher because this is in a CRX and they peak high. But in our recommended enclosures they will still put up respectable numbers over a broad bandwidth which is what these drivers are about. :)

Just think what a CRX would look like if it could fit 12 12's in it.
