Rebuilding my daily setup and I wanted to hear other peoples experience when changing from another brand to AQ. For me I have always liked subs that could play the lows with authority. Never cared for the sound of DD's except for maybe the 35 series although they are great for spl. Some brief history of the subs I ran in the past include: Lightning storms which I loved, SS splx's also liked them, and Installed some JBL gti's which in my opinion is the best sounding sub I've heard for sq. I currently compete with 2 hdc312's that are great for spl. A friend of mine has 2 hdc315's that hit hard for sure daily, but I believe his box is tuned around 37hz and although they sound great I would like a little more bottom end for my ride. Also its worth mentioning that he has interchangeable ports, and when I heard it it was with the bigger port which I believe amounts to about 18-20 sq in of port per cu ft. Power is not a concern as I have plenty of it, but I will probably end up with about 5-6k of reactive power to 2 15's. So if you have something to share about your hdc315's I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks, don.

My only experience with them was when I took out my nightshade v1 15" and swapped in the hdc315 copper coil. Both were on my db drive pd2000.1. The nightshade "sounded" louder and cleaner. No tl scores. Then the hdc3 would get stinky but the spiders ripped before I could smoke the coil. Box was 3.0cf @38hz and I don't think the hdc3 likes low bass like I was told.
Thanks for sharing, was the hdc3 sub the newer one or were they from a few years ago? From my experience with the hdc312's they took a decent while to break in and once they did they got louder, but keep in mind my 12's are in spl enclosures. Thanks AudioXtremes for sharing your results.
well im in the process of my build with two new aq hdc3 15s d2 with two aq2200s strapped . it will be a daily setup with a port plug at 32 hz and for comp il remove the plug and be at 38 hz. the subs are supper stiff. im gonna be finishing the box this weekend and will have the subs on just one amp till i get my tax refund and order my 2 amp ill chime in later with how there doing and how it sounds
For the money they are pretty good daily subs. Use something else for SPL.

they should have also told you that the 15's don't like 3cube enclosures ;)

sounds like a promising set up once it's all done and playing.
what exactly are you looking for out of this set up? what type of music will you mostly be playing?

I've built a LOT of HDC enclosures for daily set ups that also go on the meter now and then. In the right enclosure they can get respectably loud and will take a beating for daily.

They will play plenty low, but are not bottom heavy subs and will never be boomy down low or overemphasize that part of the music.

For your set up I'd do alum coils and 8.5-9cubes net. If this is daily only then tune to 35Hz, if you plan to do some metering do more port area and tune higher and then do a port reducer to drop tuning for daily...
This will be for daily, and yes I like lows. As far as spl I find the AQ 12's to be great, Compared to a few other brands that I have tried for spl they were actually better numbers wise. And the other drivers i compared them to were all capable of high spl numbers. 1 of the drivers I compared them to was actually a DD 95 series granted it was the f model. I'm pretty sure the 15's would do great numbers, my concern is mostly aimed at low frequency response. Thanks for the reply mlstrass, your comments are very helpful indeed. So basically they will play low, but will not emphasize the lower end of the spectrum. As for building a box, I got plenty experience in that department about 20 years now lol. I also believe they will take a real beating, as the 2 12's i now compete with are taking about 9k total reactive, and I still haven't got the coils to smell. The ones I use now are the copper coils, and still no smell lol, and the suspension is still stiff.
Thanks guys for all the comments, its really helpful to get other's experiences on the subject.

By the way mlstrass, I'm doing a wall @ about 11cu ft net for the 15's.

Say what? You don't think the HDC's are a good SPL sub? Lol.

Ryan might beg to differ since he's doing 160 with a pair of hdc3 10's. And that's a 30 second average on music. My 2nd at world finals also says hdc3's are quite good for SPL.

I'd have to second this... the OP is a legend here in Hawaii. Their team has done 157.Xdb with a pair of HDC312's and 154.Xdb with a single HDC3-12 on the TL legal in competition.

ALOHA FROM HAWAII,

Thanks for the post Sky, I'm trying to get a feel for how these subs will perform daily. Then price is definitely right, and I know they can take a beating, but before I commit it would be nice to hear other peoples experiences with the product. Right now i'm thinking these or the SS X3 15's. As far as legend go's I'm still learning, but nothing like trial and error lol. In the past I've bought allot of subs based on specs, but its always helpful to get peoples honest opinions of the actual product, as sometimes specs don't always hold up.

How much power? I will still say use something else for SPL, you wont need no where near the power to do the same numbers with a different sub. There spider ring falls apart for me. I average a pretty good score myself but damn look at the power I have to throw at them.
Maybe your spider ring is just an isolated event. I'm sure most of the drivers hold up very well. All manufacturers will have a few products that fail, have you tried reconing your sub or buying another? I have had no problems with my 12's so far. Sky also runs a hdc310 with no problems. I hope you have better luck with your sub in the future.

We haven't reconed yet, maybe by finals we will.
Good luck, I hope you do great at finals.

Thank you. It will be difficult we will need a 55-56 on 140 amps of fusing metering at the headrest. We already have the score but we cant get it fused yet.
Sounds like you got your work cut out for you, I hope it turns out O.K.

The class I compete in is based on clamped power classes. We cannot exceed 2060 watts during a burp. The hdc3 has kept me a full 1.5 dbs louder than anyone else in my class for 2 years running. They can get insanely loud on low power if you know the sweetspot on box and port ratios.
